How did cyclone Remal get its name?

The World Meteorological Organisation (WMO)-affiliated Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) used a structured approach to assign Cyclone Remal its name. A predetermined list of names submitted by participating nations, including India, is used in this method in a sequential manner. The list is made to help with communication and to prevent confusion, particularly when there are several cyclones happening at once. Every name is selected far in advance and in a rotating manner to represent contributions from different nations in the area.In the Indian Ocean region, cyclone naming started in 2004.

It could be difficult to identify tropical cyclones using their longitude and latitude prior to this. A simpler system was chosen by the WMO’s panel on tropical cyclones, which consists of meteorological departments from nations bordering the Indian Ocean. The names have been selected with consideration for cultural sensitivity and eloquence, guaranteeing that the public and authorities can readily recognise and understand them.Using the established methodology, a name was chosen from this list for Cyclone Remal. The goal is to help provide prompt warnings and responses to these potentially catastrophic weather phenomena by facilitating effective communication between meteorologists, the media, and the general public.
