Bollywood enjoys creating romantic comedies, but few of them manage to stand out in the sea of boy-meets-girl stories. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, which was directed by Ayan Mukerji, is most likely the favourite romantic comedy of our generation. In Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, four protagonists travel through their youth in an exhilarating and terrifying journey that ranges from their carefree laughter as they embark on a trip together in college to their bittersweet tears as they witness the first of their group get married. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani is a movie that is made for repeat viewings because of the comfort and delight it gives along with its fun plot, brilliant acting, and ground-breaking music album.
It is not often that you find a popular Bollywood movie that is both heartfelt yet commercial. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani boasted of everything that goes into producing a traditional Bollywood movie, including romance, great music, exotic settings, a star-studded ensemble cast, well-known dance moves, and even a groovy dance number by Madhuri Dixit. Yet above all, it succeeded in capturing the spirit of life. Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, one of the best coming-of-age films in Bollywood, wonderfully represents this youthful and restless generation, their own concept of romance, their friendships, and their challenges. Because of how honestly it is made, the movie is so endearing that it is impossible not to identify with one of the four main characters.
It has been ten years since Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was released, so let’s have a look at the cast to see how far they have come since then:
Deepike Padukone (Naina Talwar)
2013 was no doubt a very successful year for Deepika Padukone. With films like Chennai Express, Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela, and of course, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, she firmly established her status as one of the top stars of Bollywood. Since then, Deepika has had notable performances in films such as Piku, Tamasha, Bajirao Mastani, Padmaavat, and Chhapaak. She also made her Hollywood debut in XXX: Return of Xander Cage. Most recently, Deepika participated on the jury for the Cannes Film Festival in 2022 and attended the Oscars in 2023 to introduce the performance for Naatu Naatu. She portrayed Rubina Mohsin in Pathaan, which is the second-highest grossing Hindi movie of all time, and will soon be seen in a cameo in Shah Rukh Khan and Atlee’s Jawan.
Ranbir Kapoor (Bunny)
Ranbir has had numerous ups and downs at the box office since Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, but his acting skill has allowed him to achieve superstar status. He appeared in various films like Besharam, Roy, and Bombay Velvet, but his work in Tamasha, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, and Jagga Jasoos won everyone over. He reclaimed his prominence in 2018 with the release of Sanju, one of the highest-grossing Hindi films ever. Ranbir has recently appeared in Tu Jhoothi Main Makkaar and Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva, one of the highest-grossing films of 2022, in addition to making headlines for his wedding and the birth of his daughter. He will now appear in Animal by Sandeep Reddy Vanga very soon.
Kalki Koechlin (Aditi)
Following Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Kalki Koechlin went on to give her best performance of her career in the critically praised films Waiting and A Death in the Gunj, as well as her award-winning performance in Margarita with a Straw. In 2019, she made her Tamil film debut with the special song Nerkonda Paarvai and played a brief but significant role in Gully Boy. She has also appeared in popular web series like Made In Heaven and Sacred Games in addition to these. In 2021, she published her first book, The Elephant in the Womb.
Aditya Roy Kapur (Avi)
Since Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Aditya oddly hasn’t appeared in many films. He continues to win hearts with his cool and effortless looks and he looks better and better with each passing year. He has appeared in films like Daawat-e-Ishq, Fitoor, Ok Jaanu, and Kalankl. Malang was a commercial success, and his most recent role as Shaan Sengupta in The Night Manager brought him much love and critical recognition.
Madhuri Dixit
The success of Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani was greatly influenced by Madhuri Dixit’s cameo appearance in Ghagra, which was more than a pleasant surprise to fans. Madhuri Dixit is a genuine icon and a living legend. Madhuri then went on to star in films like Dedh Ishqiya, Gulaab Gang, Total Dhamaal, and Kalank. Madhuri has also appeared as a judge on several dance reality series since then. She was most recently seen in the online series The Fame Game and the film Maja Ma, both of which were loved by fans and critics.
Kunaal Roy Kapur (Tarun)
Kunaal has played a variety of roles after Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, including Action Jackson, Kaalakaandi, Love per Square Foot, Footfairy, Tribhanga, and, most recently, Radhe Shyam. Also, he has appeared in web series such as TVF Tripling and Bandish Bandits.
Rana Daggubati (Vikram)
While we adored him in his cameo as Vikram, Rana actually became well-known for playing the villain in the critically acclaimed films Baahubali: The Beginning and Baahubali 2: The Conclusion. He has also appeared in a number of Telugu, Tamil, and Hindi films, including 1945, Nene Raju Nene Mantri, Housefull 4, and Ghazi. Also, he has hosted a reality television programme. Few people are aware of Rana’s accomplishment as a dubbing artist, who voiced Thanos in the Telugu versions of Avengers: Infinity War and Avengers: Endgame. His most recent performance was as Rana Naidu’s title character in the web series of the same name.
Ayan Mukerji
Following Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani’s success, Ayan released the eagerly anticipated Brahmastra: Part One – Shiva in 2022, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Alia Bhatt, and Amitabh Bachchan. He’s apparently set to direct War 2, a movie set in the YRF Spy World, and he’s now working on two sequels for this fantasy movie.
