Why are individuals blocking famous people on social media platforms all around the world?
Calls for social media users to blacklist well-known celebrities and their companies in protest of their alleged silence on Israel’s attack on Gaza are quietly gaining traction online.
The “Chop Chop” movement, also known as #Blockout2024, is a way for supporters of the celebrities to express their annoyance at them for not using their platforms and power to draw attention to the Middle East’s humanitarian catastrophe. The initiative aims to “curb specific revenue streams and fame” of certain celebrities, according to one TikToker.
According to Social Blade, a social media analytics website in the US, users are sharing lists of celebrities to unfollow and block on social media sites like TikTok, Instagram, and X, which has led to a noticeable drop in followers.
